DIY for Columbus Home BuyersBecoming a homeowner gives you the freedom to redecorate and upgrade your living space. While this is an advantage of home ownership, some Columbus home buyers have little experience in home improvement. Fortunately, there are abundant resources to help you learn do-it-yourself projects!

We’re sharing some examples to help you explore topics that interest you. Please note, this list doesn’t imply an endorsement of any particular company. Rather, it’s a collection of sources to give you a starting point.

BobVila.com: Vila’s website offers a wide range of practical DIY tips for home and garden. Everything from cleaning tips, to repairs and installations.

YouTube: Search for instructional videos about appliance troubleshooting and repair, plus any number of home improvement topics. Use caution, however; some videos are little more than advertisements, while others are very educational. Watch a few videos about a specific topic, and look for consistent information.

Lowe’s How-To’s: Installation, repair and maintenance videos, along with buying guides and project calculators.

Home Depot DIY Workshops: Free, in-store workshops are held every weekend at participating stores. Topics vary. Find your local store online, then click DIY Projects & Ideas from the top navigation menu. Scroll down to DIY Workshops.

The Columbus Dispatch Home & Garden Show, Feb 20-28: This is the big one! This popular show offers an impressive array of services, products and ideas in home improvement, with live demonstrations throughout each day. Learn about materials and get how-to advice from craftsmen. Over 350 area professionals are on site.

Columbus Home Improvement Show, April 15-17: A little of everything, including home remodeling, home décor and garden displays. If you are looking for local contractors to handle a project, this is an easy way to meet them and ask some questions.

Of course, not everyone has the time, talent, and tools – or temperament – to handle DIY projects! While it pays to know how to paint a room, fix a leaky faucet and take care of home maintenance, some things are better left to the pros. Also please note that some projects may require a building permit, or advance approval by your homeowner’s association. Check before you begin!

You can reduce your likelihood of facing major repairs by buying a well-built home in good condition. While no home is perfect, knowing what to look for in property condition can help you avoid expensive pitfalls!

We offer our free e-book, “How to Buy a Home Like a Pro” to get you started! When you become our Buyer-Client, you will receive our “Educated Buyer Notebook” with priceless knowledge and expert insights.
