Central Ohio Homeowners Should Check Tree Health

Central Ohio HomeownersThere’s a logic debate you might be familiar with: “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” People still argue the answer, but there is a fact you can be sure of. If your tree falls on your property – or your neighbor’s property – it’s definitely going to make a sound. A very expensive sound.

Rather than risk damage, injury or liability because of trees on your property, it’s wise to inspect them for signs of trouble. Here are tips to help you!

  1. Check for branches with dead leaves that have not fallen, and for branches that never produced foliage. Take a photo of any problem areas. You can use a photo app or graphics program to mark the problem spots for your reference. Next, call an arborist to inspect the tree. The arborist can mark the branches in need of pruning, and schedule the job.

If you plan to do any tree pruning yourself, the best time to tackle the project is late fall and early winter. Remember that trees can be damaged by improper pruning, and homeowners can be damaged by improper pruning! Consider calling a pro.

  1. Evergreens are not immune to problems. Check for orange or brownish “rust” and evidence of shedding. Localized discoloration may be treatable with fertilizer or other care, but have it looked at by a pro.
  1. Examine tree leaves for dark, dot-like spots, and for any signs of wilt or blight. This can be caused by fungus, bacteria, rot or disease. All can be serious problems if left unchecked. If your trees have already shed much of their foliage, inspect the leaves on your lawn.
  1. If you see signs of wilt, blight or fungus on fallen leaves, do not mulch them. The problem could spread to other trees. Remove these leaves with a rake and tarp. Bag them up securely, or, if safe to do so and permitted by your municipality, burn them.
  1. You can research tree issues, learn how to hire an arborist, and get good advice at the Ohio State University Extension website!
